Toyota Halts Sales On 8 Recalled Vehicle Models

Toyota is suspending U.S. sales of eight recalled vehicle models to fix accelerator pedals that stick. As part of the plan, Toyota is halting production at five manufacturing facilities for the week of Feb. 1 “to assess and coordinate activities.” There are 2.3 million vehicles involved in the recall, which was announced last week. The sales suspension includes the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequoia. Toyota previously recalled 4.2 million vehicles due to gas pedals that could become trapped under floor mats, causing the vehicle to accelerate.

Local Woman Dies In Route 4 Car Crash

A local Farmington woman died in a head-on crash on Route 4 in Farmington, Connecticut.� The driver of the car that struck the woman’s car crossed over the median before impact.� Farmington police continue to investigate the accident.� Alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributory factor in the car accident.

Avoiding Car Accidents During Bad Winter Weather

Bad winter weather is all too common for drivers in Connecticut and throughout the Northeast. Obviously, the best safety tip in avoiding a car accident in bad winter weather is to stay off the roads. But, this is not always a viable option. Many of us need to get to work or reach an important destination such as a pharmacy or hospital, so if you are out driving in winter weather keep these practical safety tips in mind.

1. Watch out for shaded areas on the road. Due to the lack of sun exposure, these shaded areas typically will have snow and ice where the rest of the sunlight roadway is clear of snow and ice.
2. For older cars, check your battery, cable connections, alternator and drive belts. Check your cooling system to make sure that you have the right mix of fresh antifreeze and water. Check hoses for cracks or leaky connections. These checks can prevent an engine from dying on the roadway leaving you stranded in bad weather.
3. Make sure the tires on the car are winter tires or all-season tires. Furthermore, make sure the tires still have good tread. Worn tires will not grip the roadway causing the car to slip and slide.
4. Keep a half a tank of gas in the tank. If you get caught in traffic or in a snowbank, you want sufficient gas to keep the car running and heated.
5. Keep a safety kit in your car that includes a bottle of water, candy bar, flashlight, gloves, jumper cables, and flares.
6. Keep a bag of sand and shovel in the trunk. If you get stuck in snow, you can use the shovel for the snow and then lay down the sand to give your tires traction when getting out of the snow.
Following these safety tips will hopefully prevent a car accident or car breakdown during bad winter weather, but if a car accident does happen, these tips will make the accident a lot more manageable.

Jury Awards Damages To Truck Accident Victim

A Tennessee jury awarded $6.65 million in damages recently to the mother of a 17-year-old girl who died in a tractor-trailer accident. Lindsey Garretson was killed August 8, 2000 when a truck driven by Stuart Foy slammed into the back of her car on Interstate 40. Foy failed to slow the tractor-trailer, owned by KLLM Transport Services Inc., when vehicles began braking to avoid a mattress that had fallen off another truck.� Plaintiff attorneys argued that Foy should never have been employed by KLLM due to his record of reckless driving and several accidents.

In 2005 officials notified 98 epidural recipients of possible infection after the two cases were reported. No additional cases resulted from those tested. CT Senior Citizen Hit By Car

An 86-year old man is recovering after being hit by a car in Enfield, Connecticut. It happened about 2:30 Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the Brookside Plaza on Hazard Avenue. Police say a woman driving a 2002 Hyndai hit the man. He was then taken to Baystate Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts. There is no report on the nature and extent of the man’s injuries.� The accident is under police investigation.
