Genetic Discrimination Ban Nears Congressional Approval

February 15th, 2007

Congress is close to passing legislation banning discrimination by employers and insurers based on genetic informaton.  The legislation would be the first federal law prohibiting health insurance companies from denying coverage or charging higher premiums based solely on genetic information.  The proposed law will also ban employers from using genetic information to make hiring, firing and other job-placement decisions.  This legislation will not only make it unlawful to discriminate based upon genetic information but it will also encourage people to be genetically tested for risks such as cancer.  Why? because people can get tested without being fearful that the results of the tests can be used to discriminate against them in the workplace or when applying or obtaining insurance.
